350 degrees 30 to 35 minutes, two-9 inch layers\
Cream together:
½ cup sweet butter and 1 cup sugar, beat five minutes
Add
2 eggs, one at a time, beat well after each addition.
Sift into another bowl:
2 cups flour
11/2 teaspoons baking soda, pinch salt
In another bowl combine
½ cup sugar
1 ½ cups buttermilk(preferable) or sour milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon red food coloring, optional.
Add this mixture alternately with flour mixture to creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Divide between two pans.
FROSTING:
Combine 1 cup sugar, ½ cup flour. Add 2 squares of shaved bitter chocolate. Stir in 1 ½ cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of light corn syrup. Cook over low heat, stir until thick and smooth. Add 2 tablespoons butter and l teaspoon vanilla. When cooled, beat l egg white and fold in.
